DEM participation in ISLH 2026
May 18, 2026
The DEM participates in the International Society for Laboratory Hematology (ISLH 2026) congress with one oral communication and 4 scientific posters on artificial intelligence applied to hematological diagnosis.
Professor Kevin Barrera participated in the International Society for Laboratory Hematology (ISLH 2026) congress, held in Edinburgh, where he presented different works developed within the CellsiLab-CoDAlab research environment. Among the contributions presented was the oral communication entitled “Automated detection of red blood cell abnormalities in peripheral blood smears using SAM and ResNet”, focused on the use of artificial intelligence models for the automatic analysis of hematological abnormalities in peripheral blood images.
In addition, 4 scientific posters related to artificial intelligence applied to hematological diagnosis were presented during the congress, including works on the detection of acute myeloid leukemia using vision transformer-based models, automatic discrimination of malaria parasites, quantification of reactive lymphocytes in CAR-T therapy, and early detection of myelodysplastic syndromes using models based on Sysmex-XR cell population data. These works are developed within the framework of the collaboration between the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Mathematics of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, together with Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, in research lines focused on computer vision, deep learning, and support for clinical diagnosis through artificial intelligence.
