New project to personalize spinal cord injury rehabilitation

Jun 20, 2025

Researcher Míriam Febrer Nafría, from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at UPC and the Institute for Research and Innovation in Health (IRIS), has received a Leonardo Grant from the BBVA Foundation to carry out an innovative pilot study on the rehabilitation of patients with incomplete spinal cord injury. The project, to be conducted at the Institut Guttmann, combines wearable technologies such as IMU, EMG, and force sensors with personalized musculoskeletal simulations to analyze gait and predict patients’ functional progression. The goal is to develop computational tools to tailor and optimize rehabilitation treatments, thereby improving mobility and quality of life for those affected. The results will be shared openly to foster scientific progress in this field.
